As the first step toward transforming the existing College site, the renovation of the Hall has been a resounding success.
With a whole year of undergraduates and more post-graduates expected to live on the newly extended main site, Pembroke is now one step ahead and is ready to meet the challenge of increased catering demand when the new Quad is completed in the third quarter of 2012.
The traditional and historic fabric of the building has been scrupulously maintained (see photo), but now, not only does the Hall benefit from under-floor heating and a new food servery, but access has been improved by the installation of a lift and a suite of toilets - all in the same building as the Hall itself - meaning it is now a one-stop user-friendly destination for College Events.
The Forte Room has been extended, without compromising its stunning floor-to-ceiling windows which allow natural light to flood the room during daytime events, and can now cater for 50 diners.
The removal of the old kitchen from the basement has allowed the College to create a spacious new vaulted Cellar Bar running the entire length of the Hall above. Ktited out with the obligatory plasma screen and touch-screen juke box, its stone walls and blonde wood furniture mean it can rival any city centre bar, but with the added cachet of a private members' club.
The clutter of service trolleys in the Screens Passage by the Hall is now a thing of the past, and the College will be able to offer two sittings for dinner; one informal, one more formal. With the new kitchen fitted out with top-of-the-range catering equipment, Pembroke is ready to bring 21st century dining to all.
